DEVELOPING: Historical Discovery Made During Little White Schoolhouse Move?

UPDATED: APRIL 20TH 2023

Prompts Call for Archeological Investigation

Ripon, Wisconsin – The recent move of the Little White Schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin, has revealed a startling discovery. A door frame was discovered under the ground in the foundation during the relocation process. This finding indicates that the site could contain significant unknown archeological artifacts. We would like to know who knew of this door, when, and where does it lead?

In light of this potentially remarkable discovery, concerned citizens and preservationists are calling for an immediate archeological investigation to be conducted on the site in accordance with Wisconsin law. They are also urging the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Officer, Ms. Daina Penkiunas, to intervene in the construction project to ensure that proper procedures are followed.

The Little White Schoolhouse was a national historic landmark and a cherished symbol of American democracy. It played a significant role in the formation of the Republican Party and served as a meeting place for local abolitionists. The discovery of the door frame underscores the importance of conducting a thorough archeological investigation of the site to protect and preserve this national treasure.

The citizens and preservationists of Ripon remain committed to the protection and preservation of the Little White Schoolhouse, the Underground Railroad and its historical significance. We will continue to work diligently with any and all local, state or national officials to ensure that proper procedures are followed and that the site is fully investigated for any significant archeological findings.

UPDATE: We are pleased to report that we have received the following response to this inquiry.

Thank you for your email. As you are most likely aware, the Little White Schoolhouse was moved to the pictured location in the mid-twentieth century. The photo of the construction method is more consistent with the date of the move than a remnant of an earlier building’s foundation.
