This historic event will celebrate its 172nd anniversary in 2026, adding even greater significance to Ripon’s inclusion in America’s 250th celebrations.
Ripon’s story of freedom goes beyond the formation of a political party. It is the story of Joshua Glover, an escaped enslaved man who found temporary safety in Wisconsin, only to be recaptured under the Fugitive Slave Act. His dramatic rescue by abolitionists and Wisconsin’s refusal to return him to slavery reflect Ripon’s values and inspire us still today.
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower lit Ripon’s Freedom Flame in honor of these events, making it a lasting symbol of our commitment to liberty and equality. As we approach the 72nd anniversary of this flame’s lighting, we renew our call for the world to recognize Ripon’s contributions to American ideals.
